Sauron Had controll over many areas across Middle-earth.
His campain on the North which included of Battle for Sale and Erebor where surely one of the most important battles for Middle-earth. Having a powerfull force of Easterlingów from Rhun,Dol-Guldur and Gundabad in the middle-north areas allowed to start this war effort. Though what could happen to Middle-earth if Sauron will NOT even initiate this campain.
Here is my theorie what could have happened:
In the third age during the War of the Ring middle-north kingdoms were recovering after the economy level was restored(after recapturing of Erebor). 17 Years before that Sauron retook Dol-Guldur, once more harrasing people of mirkwood and Lothlorien. Though while times of War of the Ring the Balrog, Durin's Bane was defeated. Dwarves of Durin's folk would have wanted to retake their homeland if there was no resist of Sauron. They will allie with both Lothlorien and mirkwood, destroying Dol-Guldur and retaking Moria. That will be a start of North Alliance. Which will be a threat for Sauron. Gundabad will not be an honourable rival and soon dwarves will even retake their ancient homeworld Gundabad. With Moria and Gundabad eliminated Sauron will lose most of forces from Misty Mountains. The Isengard was already eliminated by Enta and Battle of Helm's Deep was also losed for Uruk-hai. The Dunlendings will no longer be allies of Sauron, because they will be devastated after war in Rohan.
At this point elves of Lindon and Imladris will also join new alliance improving much their economy. Ettenmoors and Etten swamps will be cleared by soldiers of Rivendell and Dwarves from Gundabad so the new pass through North will be now a great route from Lindon to Iron Hills and Lothlorien. Easterlings will be even afraid on answering for call of the Dark Lord for campains in North. They no longer will be a threat to the North. In my theorie after long siege Gondor falls and Rohirim reinforcements were destroyed by armies of Mordor and Morgul. That will mean that there will be no engagement near Black Gate of Morranor and Sam and Frodo will be caught. And tortured to death by Mouth of Sauron and the Dark Lord himslef because he now reclaimed the ring and regained his phisical form. Though even all those terrible things will be nothing if Sauron will totally lost his controll over Rhovanion, Eriador and Misty Mountains. His East allies will mutiny against other tribes for this unfortunet situation. No agressors from Moria and Isengard will lead to restore of the Kingdom of Rohan. The new North Alliance will march onto armies of Mordor. Rohirim, Dwarves from Moria, Gundabad, Lonely mountain, Iron Hills and elves of Lindon, Imladris, Lothlorien and Mirkwood would destroy Sauron once for all or maybe the History of the Ring will repeat once again.
What do you think about this alternative scenario. It's almost unbelieveble that one foolish move of Sauron could totally led him for defeat.
